What Made "Producing" music such a passion for you?
Producing music has been my love since the time I could remember. I was inspired initially by Prince when I was 7 years old after watching Purple Rain. Purple Rain was the first song that I taught myself on the piano and that started the dream of making my own songs that would connect to people. To have the opportunity to make an impact on my culture through song is inspiring in itself, but being the architect of that song is literally awesome. Through the ups and downs of the music industry, that reward makes it all worth it. There is literally no greater feeling in the world to me than someone saying... "I love that song".
what has to captivate you to want to produce a song for an artist?
Music is very intimate. It is very much built on vibe. It's important for me to be a fan of the artist. That doesn't mean that they have to be a superstar. They don't have to be at all. They just have to possess the talent and the knack for connecting with people. I remember working with Nicki Minaj before the stardom. I literally felt her desire to connect to people. She had a message that she wanted to convey and I wanted to be a part of that journey. I look at her now on television and I still see that desire. That's all I need, honestly.
Recently, you produced the hit record sensation "Acura Integurl" from Frank Ocean What brought about that connection?
Frank came to see me while I lived in Malibu, Ca. We have mutual friends and they thought it'd be a good idea for us to meet. They told me that Frank didn't just vibe with everyone, so I immediately assumed we would hit it off. lol. He was very cool... kinda quiet and we vibed out. The more music I played, the more he opened up. When I played the track for "Acura Integurl", he had ideas right away, but his first idea was for me to just play the piano and let him rock. Very organic... vibe filled. I am very much in favor of rocking with the aritst's vibe. The number one job for a music producer is to let the artist do what they do. After, they're done... clean it up and make it sound special. My plan was to get Frank back in after that first encounter and finish the song. I planned on making it this epic piece, etc. We never got the chance to get back up and he put the song out with a video off of the rough sketch we did that same day. It caught me completely by surprise and it was definitely NOT what I had in mind. Reflecting back, however... I wouldn't change a thing. I'm honored to be the producer of the song for his first video.
What are your future goals for the rest of this year alone? And what's should folks look out for next from the infamous Dre Knight?
My goals for the rest of the year are to continue to create music that connect to the people. I have been in the music industry for 5 years now and have been relatively under the radar. I think I've had enough of that. (smile). I have an extraordinary network of songwriters that I work with and I will continue to build with them. I have a couple artists that I am currently developing and a Sizzla Kalonji reggae album that I produced that is scheduled to be released this summer. I usually post tons of video on my personal facebook page of me working in the studio and the hackers usually find time to get into my email accounts and leak my songs on youtube. (smile). My closest friends have been telling me that I have next.... My goal is to have NOW...
